A sinfonia nasceu no teatro. Antes de ser a forma que enche as salas de concerto, era a página que se tocava com o pano ainda descido; e foi em Milão, nas mãos de Giovanni Battista Sammartini, que ela se soltou da ópera e passou a existir por si.
Nos mesmos anos, muito a norte, um homem nascido em Bergen enchia os palcos de Copenhaga: Ludvig Holberg, a quem chamaram o Molière do Norte. Século e meio depois, outro filho de Bergen - Edvard Grieg - escreveu para o bicentenário do nascimento de Holberg a suíte que hoje leva o seu nome, e vestiu-a com as danças antigas do palco barroco, que eram as do tempo do homenageado e não as suas. Já no século XX a música de cena mudou de casa: deixou o palco e foi para o ecrã.
É esse percurso que a Algarve Camerata faz neste concerto. Da sinfonia milanesa de Sammartini às danças nórdicas de Grieg, e daí a sete bandas sonoras que sobreviveram aos filmes que as originaram.

Já no século XX a música de cena mudou de casa: deixou o palco e foi para o ecrã.
É esse percurso que a Algarve Camerata faz neste concerto. Da sinfonia milanesa de Sammartini às danças nórdicas de Grieg, e daí a sete bandas sonoras que sobreviveram aos filmes que as originaram.

The symphony was born in the theatre. Before it became the form that fills concert halls, it was the piece played while the curtain was still down; and it was in Milan, in the hands of Giovanni Battista Sammartini, that it broke free of the opera house and began to exist in its own right.
In those same years, far to the north, a man born in Bergen was filling the stages of Copenhagen: Ludvig Holberg, whom they called the Molière of the North. A century and a half later another son of Bergen - Edvard Grieg - wrote, for the bicentenary of Holberg's birth, the suite that now bears his name, dressing it in the old dances of the baroque stage: the dances of the man he was honouring, not his own. Already in the twentieth century the music of the stage moved house: it left the theatre for the screen.
That is the journey the Algarve Camerata makes in this concert. From Sammartini's Milanese symphony to Grieg's northern dances, and on to seven film scores that have outlived the films that gave rise to them.
